The New Stadium...
June 2002
remember, all photos are thumbnails - click on them to get the bigger version
When you see
you can click on it and get a really big, non-zoomed version of the day's photo!
Every Saturday I take an extra large photo and
every Sunday I replay the photo from the same day the year before.
 Sunday,
June 30 - 1:30 p.m. - I thought I'd post one more XL
picture - the finished shot. My pictures from here
on out will all be the nonXL size (this is just a matter
of server rental fees). But, I know some of you use
the big ones for screen savers so I thought I'd give you
one more. And, heck, there probably will be more
anyway - now and again - as things happen. |
Saturday,
June 29, 6:15 a.m. - The north parking lot seems
really really big. |
Friday,
June 28, noon - Well the final day of construction has
turned out to be a drippy one. At least it's cooled
off some! The parking lot fences are down. The
pictures from the tour on Tuesday
are up!! |
Thursday,
June 27, 5 p.m. - In 24 hours they will be done.
Wow. I totally forgot to mention on Tuesday that
they took down that ugly orange fencing that they had
around the staircase. Looks like they are still
working on the artwork and that should be done tomorrow,
too. Amazing. I am hoping to get the new tour
pictures tomorrow afternoon. |
 Wednesday,
June 26, 5 p.m. - It's another hot day here.
They carted away one of the parking lot guard houses today
and tomorrow the other one goes. There's a circle in
today's picture. It's a little temporary hut
constructed to protect the finishing work being done on
the inlaid artwork. On the right is a sneak preview
of the tour pictures - a close-up of that same inlaid
artwork. |
Tuesday,
June 25, 5 p.m. - Big news today. I just got
home from a tour of the stadium! I have tons of
fabulous pictures. It may be a few days before I get
them posted so be patient. But, it will be worth the
wait. The stadium will be finished absolutely on
time this coming Friday. It will be turned over to
the owners and they have a lot of work to do. The
restaurant and the suites need furniture and all the
concession stands need to move in and get ready and tons
of other stuff that is all behind the scenes stuff.
That's what will be going on between now and the first
event on July 20. This coming Friday, the fence
comes down and the north parking lot becomes one again.
The place is really wonderful. |
Monday,
June 24, 5 p.m. - They were putting finishing touches
on today particularly, the handicapped parking area.
All organized an painted. Now, I need to clarify.
Thanks so much for all your notes. I have no
plans to abandon this page at all - ever - honest.
Worst case, I might go back to one shot a week eventually,
but that would be the very least. |
 Sunday,
June 23, 1 p.m. - Nothing going on at the stie today.
I think I've made a decision about what I'm going to do
about these pages when the construction is done.
I'll continue taking the photo every day - same view - but
since there won't be much action, I probably will keep
commentary to a minimum if any. |
 Saturday,
June 22, 9:20 a.m. - Turns out the auction is,
apparently, not an auction but a sale. When I got up
at 6:30 a.m., there were already about 75 people in line.
No line now but a steady flow of people buying tackling
dummies and other stuff. There are workers wandering
around today. I'll bet it's Finishing Touching Week. |
 Friday,
June 21, 4:30 p.m. - One week to go.
Wow. Still got that orange stuff on the stairs but
otherwise, it's looking pretty finished already. I
included an extra photo today of the auction set up -
sorry about the trees blocking the view. Judging
from the setup, it must be invitation only. |
 Thursday,
June 20, 5 p.m. - I totally forgot to mention grass.
Yep, they laid a strip of grass just at the new fence
behind the shrubs but over on the left (you'll see in
Saturday's XL shot) there's a nice big patch of it.
It looks really nice. Sean captured the night shot
on the left from the Turner Web cam - quite spectacular
with all those lights. |
Wednesday,
June 19, 5 p.m. - I heard this weekend that there is
going to be a tent sale in the stadium parking lot this
Saturday of old Seahawks stuff. And, sure enough,
they put up the tent today. It's kind of hard to
see, peeking out of the leaves in the bottom right hand
corner of the photo but it's a big tent.
Should make for a fun picture this weekend. Sure
wish they would take down that orange stuff on the
stairways. |
 Tuesday,
June 18, 5 p.m. - Well, I have to say the lit up
stadium is quite a wonderful sight. This photo shows
it a little but really doesn't do it justice. Sean
found some cool photos, movies at the
Seahawks website (warning, if you're in the office you
might want to turn your sound off or plug in your
earphones). |
Monday,
June 17, 5 p.m. - Lots more planting today and there
was a nice, gentle rain most of the day to make the new
plants happy. They have turned on some of the lights
already. When it gets dark and they turn on the
rest, I'll try to get us a shot of the light show. |
 Sunday,
June 16, 2:15 p.m. - Well, yesterday's mystery is solved -
Thanks to
Todd Breda of our very own logo fame. Yesterday
afternoon they finished putting up the fences and have
done some more planting. Now, I have some special
skippy for you. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
nights of this week they will be testing the lights and
have all of them turned on. Likely you'll be able to
see the show from the
First and Goal Webcam. Oh and I decided to go
back two years for the historical photo today... Remember
when we could see Ranier (kind of) and Safeco? |
  Saturday,
June 15, 11 a.m. - Breaking news! There's
something going on at the stadium today and I can't figure
out what... The picture on the right shows the queue
(interestingly, there is nearly as big a queue for the
porta poty as the line to get in - see circle). If
you look closely, after they 'get in' some big football
player looking dude is shaking everybody's hand. As
I type this the queues have gotten twice as long.
What the heck is going on? I can't see where they
are going. The only other thing in the 'hood this
weekend is the Antiques Road Show at the exhibition hall.
The people in these queues are definitely NOT Antiques
Road Show people - they have that distinctive football fan
look. |
Friday,
June 14, 12:30 p.m. - We have a pretty big development
today. If you look really closely inside the circle
you can see fencing lying on the ground just on the other
side of the bushes. I wondered how they were going
to keep people from tramping through the bushes. Now
I know. They have already put it up just to the left
of where the picture stops - it's nice looking fencing -
matches the rest of the stadium. They are paving,
today, too. |
Thursday,
June 13, 5 p.m. - Today's photo show two vehicles in
the parking lot... both red. Do you think maybe this
is Office Red Vehicle day? I have a red car...
maybe I should move it out to the lot. The paving in
the rest of the lot still hasn't started. They've
been grating and pushing dirt around for several days now. |
Wednesday,
June 12, 5 p.m. - It was a hot (for Seattle) and sunny
day here today... good day to work outside but it looks
like a lot of the work on the site was inside. Last
night - about 8ish - the alarms at the stadium started
going off. I counted 5 fire trucks go by but there
may have been more. They went down to the southwest
entrance. No clue what was happening. |
 Tuesday,
June 11, 4 p.m. - Two pictures again today because it
looks like this is the last pre-parking lot day for that
north end of the lot. They are paving over the
trailer park... now, doesn't that sound like a country and
western song?? |
Monday,
June 10, 5 p.m. - They're busy doing a lot of
finishing work that is out of the range of the camera.
More gates, some bike racks, and more work in the parking
lot. The ClamCam Forum had to go, but we still do
have the ClamCam Mailing list. To join, just send
email to
clamcam-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. And, sadly,
Dan Sherbek has retired his webcam that showed the
northwest gate. |
 Sunday,
June 9, 1:30 p.m. - There are a couple of people
wandering around the site today but otherwise is it very
quite. Amazing how black and white looking last
year's photo is compared to today's. |
  Saturday,
June 8, 11 a.m. - It's another 3 picture Saturday!
In the regular picture I circled where workers are putting
a roof on the northwest gate. In the picture on the
right, I circled a little gaggle of hard hatted people at
the security hut who are obviously getting ready for a
tour. Also in the back of that shot - see arrow -
they are setting up for more paving. But, the big
news is ... no trailers - they've totally cleared out the
whole front area. Wow. Wonder where old, beat
up trailers go? |
Friday,
June 7, 6 p.m. - The two new poles are in... They are
light poles - I circled them. They also installed
more gates leading to the north parking lot. More
plantings around and less stuff in the rest of the parking
lot. I'll bet they do more paving next week. |
Thursday,
June 6, 5 p.m. - Sean's eagle eye spotted the new
railing (see circle) that replaced the old plywood they
had put up. Nearly all the trailers are gone now.
That section of the parking lot looks very deserted.
They didn't have the lights on last night so I guess I got
the night picture just in time. |
 Wednesday,
June 5, 5 p.m. - Today they put gates up (see the
circle) at one of the entrances. At night, they have
had lots of lights on. So many that last night I was
able to even get a photo. It's pretty spectacular to
see - a lot more spectacular than the picture shows. |
Tuesday,
June 4, 5 p.m. - I circled a big pole that is waiting for
installation. I think that's one of the two that is
supposed to be installed near the grand staircase.
Rich sent me a note this morning telling me that
First and Goal had new pictures and
Charpy has some great new ones. Check 'em out! |
 Monday,
June 3, 2:30 p.m. - The big news today is what is
gone... Trailers! For the first time I can
remember, I can now see the north security booth.
They really cleared out a bunch of stuff today. Half
of the Turner complex is sprinkled around the lot.
And vehicles are now using the new parking area. |
Sunday,
June 2, 1 p.m. - This is odd, but, apparently, I've
never been here to take a photo on June 2!! My book
of snapshots (pre-web photos) is on loan for an
architectural show featuring the Kingdome. So I got
no history today! I can tell you that they spent
this morning making the final tears on the Turner
trailers. They are still picking it apart as I type
this. |
  Saturday,
June 1, 4 p.m. - I happened by the south end of the
stadium today and they were painting the southwest corner.
I hadn't even realized that it hadn't been painted yet.
Today's extra picture shows the few trailers left.
The Turner trailer complex (all the way in the back) is
getting torn apart. They worked on it all morning.
They are going to haul it out on Monday and the Turner
folks have moved their offices into that concrete
structure just to the left of their trailers. |
